Harness Nature. Restore Balance.

We are a marine restoration company that turns Australia's most destructive invasive species into premium functional bioactive ingredients — actively healing our reefs while we do it.

Discover Our Story
Wild-harvest wakame seaweed.

We don't just talk about sustainability — we prove it.

ORA was founded on a single conviction: that the answer to some of our most pressing environmental problems is already in the ocean, waiting to be turned into a solution. We harvest invasive seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida / Wakame) and sea urchin (Centrostephanus rodgersii) from Australian coastal waters — two species that are devastating native marine ecosystems — and transform them into high-performance bioactive ingredients for cosmetics, skincare, and personal care. Every product sold is underpinned by verified removal of invasive biomass from Australian waters. It's not a marketing claim. It's how our supply chain works.

Functional bioactives from the sea.

Our ingredients are sourced, processed, and verified in-house — from the ocean floor to the formulation bench. This full supply chain ownership means unmatched quality, provenance, and a sustainability story that holds up to scrutiny.

Fucoidan from Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame Seaweed)

Wakame is one of the world's most ecologically destructive invasive seaweeds. In Australian waters it outcompetes native algae and smothers reef habitats. By harvesting it commercially, we actively suppress its spread while producing one of the most bioactive-rich skincare ingredients available.

Our Fucoidan extract is freeze-dried — a critical advantage over air-dried alternatives. Freeze-drying locks in the seaweed's full spectrum of bioactives, including fucoidan, alginates, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. The result is an extract that performs consistently in formulations and supports strong efficacy claims.

The Sea Urchin Problem

The Longspined Sea Urchin (Centrostephanus rodgersii) is one of the most ecologically destructive marine pests in southeastern Australia. Its population has exploded to an estimated 20 million individuals — creating vast 'urchin barrens' where once-thriving kelp forests stood.

State and federal governments are now funding active culling programmes in Tasmania and Victoria. ORA operates as a commercial partner to these programmes — providing an economic incentive that makes large-scale, sustained removal commercially viable for the first time.

02

What We Do With the Urchin

Where others see waste, we see raw material. We wild harvest sea urchin and collect waste from seafood processors to make functional ingredients.

IN DEVELOPMENT

Collagen & Chitosan

Under development at our lab are our collagen and chitosan projects — expected to launch in 2027.

Marine collagen is one of skincare's most sought-after actives, and sea urchin connective tissue is a scientifically documented source. Chitosan is a versatile biopolymer derived from chitin, the structural material in the urchin's shell. Both carry the provenance that defines every ORA ingredient: traceable, wild-harvest, from an invasive species being actively removed to protect Australia's reef ecosystems.

Chitosan applications

01

Skincare

How Chitosan Works

Mimics the skin’s natural barrier; locks in moisture and soothes irritation

Benefit

Ideal for sensitive skin; clinically comparable to hyaluronic acid in hydration studies

02

Hair Care

How Chitosan Works

Positively charged polymer coats each hair strand (which carries a negative charge)

Benefit

Reduces frizz, adds shine, and strengthens hair against damage

03

Cosmetics

How Chitosan Works

Forms a thin film that helps makeup bond to skin; natural antimicrobial keeps formulas stable

Benefit

Longer wear, clean-beauty compliant, extends formula shelf life

04

Sunscreen

How Chitosan Works

Holds UV-filtering ingredients evenly on skin; forms a water-resistant, biodegradable film

Benefit

Longer-lasting protection; reef-safe alternative to synthetic film-formers

05

Agriculture

How Chitosan Works

Biostimulant that triggers plant immune responses, improves seed germination, and enriches soil

Benefit

Organic-approved; reduces reliance on synthetic chemicals and supports water retention during drought

Every kilo of chitosan we produce means more urchins removed from Australian reefs.
